Privacy Protection is a service available with your domain name. You may either enable this service at the time of Registering/Transferring your domain name or enable/disable this service anytime during the length of the domain name's registration, as per your requirement.

When you enable Privacy Protection on a domain name, all your publicly visible contact details is replaced with alternate contact information so that when a WHOIS query is performed on that domain, an alternate mailing address, email address and phone number are displayed.

Also since your contact information is public, you are at risk for identity theft and fraud and of being contacted by harassers and stalkers.
